Biomass Distributed Power Generation Study, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation
ANTARES conducted this study to determine the feasibility of using a biomass gasifier to fuel a 5 MW turbine generator. This generator would serve a remote community located in a forested region. The system would be a substitute for a transmission system upgrade. The generator would use local wood residues and would contribute to the local economy.ANTARES conducted a resource evaluation to determine the amount and price of wood residues in the region. A conceptual design for the gasifier, turbine, generator, substation and ancillary equipment was developed. A cost estimate was assembled and a financial analysis projected the cost of the power.
The results indicated there was more than sufficient biomass resource available. However, the state of the art in biomass gasification for use in gas turbines was not yet at the commercial stage, with several important technical issues yet to be resolved. The projected cost of the power was well above market rates. Finally, a transmission line upgrade would require less capital investment and provide a better return than the proposed plant.
